We are currently seeking an Engineering Manager to join our rapidly growing Machine Learning team. In this role, you will be leading a team that works on complex and challenging problems that will have an impact on the 41,000+ scientists across the world who rely on BenchSci for their research. As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for the planning of upcoming work, coordinating multiple engineering teams, and coaching team members. You will work closely with tech leads and scientists to evaluate priorities, spot potential problems before they occur, and support the team’s technical roadmap with planned engineering investments.

This position is open to candidates who would like to work remotely (outside of the GTA) or in-person at our Toronto office (post-COVID). For candidates who will be working within the GTA once we return to the office, we will continue to have ongoing remote flexibility of up to 4 days per week (department dependent).

You Will:

– Execution: Own and drive execution of product and technical roadmaps. You will be responsible for maintaining high quality standards for everything your team delivers

– Management: Take a leadership role in our recruiting, hiring, and onboarding processes. You will be responsible for developing your team, guiding their growth, and managing performance with fair, inclusive, and equitable practices

– Technical decision making: Work closely with technical leads and engineers to provide guidance on technical solutions, backup plans, trade-offs, and design. You will be responsible for guiding your engineers towards the right technical decisions

– Processes: Work closely with Science, Web Apps, and Data Teams to define and improve processes and practices across the company with ongoing hypergrowth in mind

You Have:

– 5+ years working as a professional developer

– 2+ years working as an engineering team manager

– Experience hiring and building high-performing engineering teams 

– Software engineering experience in Python

– Experience with data engineering and machine learning design patterns and best practices

– Experience shipping machine learning into production systems 

– Strong cross-team communication and collaboration skills

– Worked on projects that have gone from proof-of-concept through multiple maintenance stages

Nice to haves, but not mandatory qualifications:

– A background in life science

– Work experience at companies during rapid growth stages

– Working experience with modern infrastructure concepts such as Kubernetes

– Experience with at least one system rewrite or migration
